Playful Learning Takes Root in Ethiopia

On 3 – 4 July 2025, Care for Education had the privilege of running a hands-on Learning through Play training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Held at the Inter Luxury Hotel, the two-day workshop brought together nearly 30 master trainers and facilitators from Save the Children, IRC/Play Matters, AISDA, and CHAI – all committed to strengthening early learning across the country.

The training was part of a broader effort to roll out the LEGO Duplo Play Box in ECD centres across Ethiopia. Our goal was to equip these trainers with practical tools and ideas so they can pass them on – reaching over 1,000 facilitators nationwide and helping many young children benefit from learning environments that are more engaging, inclusive, and joyful.

Over the two days, we explored:

  • What learning through play really means and why it matters

  • Key areas of child development, including motor, language, emotional and cognitive skills

  • Easy ways to bring play into daily routines and lessons

  • How to make use of locally available or handmade materials

  • How to make sure play is accessible to every child – no matter their background or ability

The energy in the room was incredible. Trainers shared stories, reflected on their own practices, and got stuck into playful activities that brought the theory to life. One moment that stood out was the collective realisation that play-based learning isn’t just a scheduled activity, it’s a powerful approach that can be embedded throughout the entire day. Play isn’t something to squeeze into the timetable – it can shape how we teach, connect, and support children every day.

As these trainers head back to their communities, they take more than just Duplo bricks. They take fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a deeper understanding of how powerful play can be. And they’re ready to share that with others – helping to create learning spaces where children are free to explore, imagine, and thrive.

Care for Education is proud to work alongside our partners, who share our belief in child-centred, playful learning. Together, we’re helping to create lasting change – one playful classroom at a time.

Participants building their memory, sharing personal stories, and using string to explore how neural connections form through playful learning.
